Concrete Evidence

Do you love the look of concrete countertops? Many people do. They are not only beautiful, but they are also durable, heat resistant, and pretty easy to maintain. But there are some things to keep in mind with them.

For example, concrete is porous. This can lead to two unfortunate outcomes. First, they can harbor bacteria. No one wants to think of bacteria spreading on a surface that preps food! Secondly, it’s almost impossible to avoid some food/drink stains completely. Avoid getting vinegar, wine, lemon juice, or other acidic foods on them, or at least wipe it up immediately. Resealing your countertops with a concrete countertop sealer about once a year will help minimize staining and help keep out bacteria.

Despite being strong, concrete countertops are susceptible to cracks and chips. Be sure to not drop anything heavy on the edge of your countertop. If you do get a crack, a fluid epoxy can be used to help fill the crack.

Concrete countertops aren’t perfect. But they can be a beautiful addition to your home. Just remember that they need a little care, and accept the fact that they won’t stay looking perfect. If you choose concrete, embrace the rustic charm!
