Using Ladders Safely

When you are doing maintenance work around your home and something is too tall and out of reach, you probably reach for a ladder to get to it. If so, be careful! Ladders are one of the major causes of injuries since many use them improperly. A ladder needs to be placed on a flat even surface unless you have a ladder that is specifically made for working on a slope, otherwise, you run a risk of tipping over.

When climbing a ladder and working on it, you need to have 3 points of contact at all times. Sometimes you might need both hands for the work you are doing. In cases like that, you should have some type of harness to keep you in place. If something is out of reach, don’t try to stretch out to get to it, it is much safer to climb down, move the ladder, and then get to it safely.
